Area teams thrive during qualifying

SATURDAY’S FOUR QUALIFYING Sprint Boat races turned out well for the three area boats at Extreme Sports Park.

Dan Morrison and Cara McGuire of Port Angeles poured it on in their fourth and final qualifying lap in the Wicked Racing No. 10 boat, turning in the best time of qualifying: 47.664 seconds in the Unlimited class.

“The boat is feeling phenomenal out there, the best it’s ever felt,” Morrison said after the last lap.

“We got a little loose in a few spots that time around and probably lost three-tenths of a second, but that’s what happens when you open it up.”

Their time just edged the 47.702 put up by the Rum Runner 15M driven by Jerimy Brewer and Presley Lollar in the Unlimited class’s second round of qualifying.

The Live Wire No. 2 team of Sequim’s Paul and Taylor Gahr team posted three of the top four qualifying laps in the 400 class, including the fastest time of 53.036 seconds in its third spin through the channels.

“The boat’s running great and Taylor saved me a few times with the signals,” boat driver Paul Gahr said.

After a spin-out around the No. 3 turn on its first lap, the Sequim’s Dillon and Teri Cummings rallied to post the third-fastest overall time in the Modified class at 51.292 seconds.

“I’ve never felt the boat run so well,” Dillon Cummings said of TNT Jeepers Creepers No. 99.

“We bounced it around a little out there, but turned in a real solid lap.”
